How can I subscribe to Journal Alerts / Saved Search Alerts / RSS Feeds?

Answer

Many researchers use Journal Alerts (also called "Saved Search Alerts" and "RSS feeds") to keep up-to-date with the latest publications and research in their field of interest.

Commonly used options include:

  • notification of new articles published in a specific journal or journals;
  • notification of new publications from a specific researcher or researchers;
  • notification of new publications that match a saved search/query containing specific keyword terms and other criteria.

There are many options to set up alerts and/or subscribe to RSS Feeds. Here are just a few options that the CSUDH Librarians find helpful:

Google Scholar

Sign in to Google Scholar. Conduct a search and click on the envelope icon, then click on the CREATE ALERT button. Some excellent search alert tips are available in this video. If you wish to read an article that you receive via alert, you will need to modify the article's URL in order to sign in as a CSUDH user and read the full text; instructions are here. In the event the library does not have access to an article you wish to read, you can request if for free from InterLibrary Loan.

Library Databases

Most library databases require you to create a free account at their site in order to set up alerts. Here are instructions for our most popular databases: EBSCOhostProQuest, and PubMed.

Journal Websites

Many journal websites have the option to set up new article alerts right on the journal homepage (example: ScienceDirect Journals). As with library databases, you will first need to create a free account at the journal's site. If you wish to read an article that you receive via alert, you will need to modify the article's URL in order to sign in as a CSUDH user and read the full text; instructions are here. In the event the library does not have access to an article you wish to read, you can request if for free from InterLibrary Loan.
